• Biography of the Presenter

• Presentation
Dr. Mohammad Akram Baburi delivered a comprehensive presentation

on pneumonia, in which he explained that it is a common lower respiratory

tract infection characterized by fever, cough, sputum production, shortness

of breath, and sometimes pleuritic chest pain. He noted that patients may

show an increased respiratory rate and crackles over the affected lung area

on examination. Diagnosis is based on patient history, examination findings,

chest X-ray, and laboratory investigations such as elevated white blood cell

count and inflammatory markers, with sputum culture used in selected cases.

The most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia is Streptococcus

pneumoniae, and first-line treatment is often penicillin or related antibiotics,

depending on local resistance patterns and disease severity. He also explained

that pleural effusion may occur in some cases and may require diagnostic fluid

analysis. Atypical organisms such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Legionella

pneumophila can present with less typical features and require specific management.

In patients with prolonged symptoms or weight loss, tuberculosis (TB) should be

considered, while in immunocompromised patients, infections such as

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) and, in severe cases, fungal infections

like pulmonary mucormycosis may occur. Early diagnosis and timely

management are important for saving patient lives.
